I'm reminded of Todd Harper's piece on TH discussing his frustration with how the game's queer romances are essentially identical regardless of the player's gender, as that can rob them of the impact of a queer reading knowing it wasn't truly written that way.
While I largely agree with this, my one objection is that that pressure and conservatism as applied to sexuality is never made visible in the same ways racism, classism, etc.
It robs the precious few characters who are bisexual of any impact that makes on them and the story. Three Houses is absolutely lacking in this department, but I think the entire cast being playersexual would make it worse not better. The story doesn't happen without these ideas. The oppressive framework of the world is why Edelgard-who is bisexual!-wants to overthrow it so badly and also why Sylvain can get away with being extremely loudly straight but no one else can get away with being loudly gay or bi or anything else. These aren't accidents, they're fundamental details. Most all of the characters are classist a significant chunk of the cast is straight up racist. The entire game takes place in a monastery. Yeah, dragons and magic exist, but the "you can accept dragons but not gay people" argument isn't really applicable here-that's something leveled at annoying fans who can't accept like, gay people existing in D&D for example-because the game is explicitly about a world with very conservative social mores.
